Biography and Timeline
From Record of York-Shull-Pribble Reunions, Together With Family Histories:
Jeptha York, was born of English parentage, April 14, 1788 in Darke County, Ohio and died in White County, Indiana, in 1846. In 1808 he was married to Susanna Slaid, a native of Georgia, who had come from Maryland to Ohio.
They, with their family, left their home in Preble County, Ohio, in 1835 and drove through wood covered land to a new home in Indiana. They entered section 24 in Jackson Township, White County and built a log house for their home. Eight children were born to Jeptha and Susanna York as follows: Bellender, Lydia, Patsy, Clementine, William, John, Rebecca and Susanna.
White County had very few settlements in 1835, and Jeptha York preempted eighty acres of land on section 24 of Jackson Township, and spent the rest of his years in improving and cultivating it, and died there in 1846. His name does not appear in the official annals of the county, since he had no desire for public office, but in the early days usually supported the whig ticket. Mr. and Mrs. York were members of the Baptist church. On coming to Jackson Township he built a log house, and that was his home until his death. Though not a politician, he aligned himself with public-spirited movements in his community, was esteemed for his liberal and broad-minded attitude toward those interests which unite the people of a locality and cause it to make definite progress.
