Biography and Timeline

Enoch Pribble was born in Pickaway County, Ohio, but moved to Preble County with his parents at a young age. The Preble County, Ohio, marriage records include two marriage licenses for Enoch. The first marriage license was with Elizabeth Williams, dated December 25th, 1828. The second marriage license was dated less than two years later, with Lydia York on May 6th, 1830.

In the 1830 Ohio census, Enoch and his new wife are living in Eaton Washington Township, Preble County. Deeds recorded in Preble County indicate land was purchased from Samuel Patterson in 1830. This land was later sold to Timothy Marsh in 1836.

Enoch and his family moved to Jefferson Township, Huntington County, Indiana sometime prior to the 1840 census. The Huntington County Recorder's office have records showing several land purchases before 1837. Enoch died there at an early age, leaving behind his wife and three children under ten years old. He died from "consumption".

Lydia married Noah McGrew shortly after Enoch's death and Noah became the guardian of Enoch and Lydia's 3 young children. Lydia remained in Huntington County, Indiana, until she died on July 11th, 1903.

Both Enoch and Lydia are buried in the Jones Cemetery located east of Warren, on State Road 218 about one mile. The cemetery is back in a field on the south side of the road.

John J. Prible obituary, Bluffton, Indiana - Bluffton Evening News Friday, May 04, 1923:

John J. Prible, 90, Died This Morning. Death Of Civil War Veteran Occurs This Morning At 4:30 O'clock At His Home. John J. Prible, 90 years old, for 63 years a resident of Wells County, died of complications attending his advanced age, this morning at 4:30 o'clock at his home, 209 West Wabash street. In 1860 he had settled on the old home farm eight miles west of Bluffton. Four years ago he moved to Bluffton. Mr. Prible was born in Eaton, Preble County, Ohio, December 28, 1832, a son of Enoch M. and Lydia (York) Prible. The father was born in Kentucky, a son of Benjamin Prible, who was of English ancestry. The mother was a daughter of Jepthan York and was born in Ohio. When John J. was four years old his parents removed to Huntington County, Indiana, where the father entered a tract of government land three miles west of where Warren now stands. He passed his youth in assisting his father in clearing and improving the farm, and in attending the subscription schools that were taught in the primitive log school house. The first house in which he attended school stood on is father's farm. It had no floor, and greased paper was used for windows. When he was eight years old his father died, and his mother subsequently married Noah McGrew, with whom he resided until he was seventeen years of age. At that time he commenced working for himself, working by the month on a farm, and he also worked four years in a carding-mill. He was married December 28, 1854, to Miss Maria A. Becker, daughter of Peter and Lydia Becker, who came from Cayuga County, N. Y., when she was about seven years of age, settling in Huntington County. After his marriage Mr. Prible settled upon the land his father had entered from the government, and has followed farming ever since. July 20, 1861, he removed to this county and purchased 160 acres of heavily-timbered land on section 5, Liberty township, and commenced the work of clearing and improving a farm. On December 5, 1863, he enlisted in Co. A, Thirteenth Indiana Cavalry, going to Indianapolis, thence to Huntsville, Alabama, the following summer. He participated in the battles of Nashville and Moble, then went to Columbus, Miss., where he remained until the close of the war. He was honorably discharged and mustered out of the service November 18, 1865, at Vicksburg. He then returned to his home in Wells County, and continued farming. His first wife died in 1909. He was afterwards married to Lowan Smith Moore, who survives. The following children survive: Byron H. Prible, Bluffton; Mrs. John Ware, west of Bluffton; James Prible, near Warren; Mrs. John T. Buckner, a daughter, is deceased. A daughter, Flora, died in infancy. A sister, Mrs. Howard Thompson, and a brother, James Prible, are both deceased. Mr. Prible was a member of the Church of Christ. Funeral services will be held at the Liberty Center Baptist church Sunday at 2:30 o'clock, with burial at the Mossburg cemetery. Rev. Polly will be in charge.
