Biography and Timeline
From Bartholomew County Indiana, Family Histories, Churches & Schools 1821-1999:
RANSOM DAVIS - Ransom Davis was born about 1789 in North Carolina. He was married in Randolph Co., North Carolina 21 November 1810 to Hannah Doan, daughter of Ebenezer Doan (1768-1838) and his wife, Elizabeth Stout (1774-1808). Hannah was b. 13 December 1791 in Chatham Co., North Carolina. She was raised a Quaker in the Cane Creek meeting of Friends at Snow Camp, North Carolina and dismissed for her marriage to a non-member. Nevertheless, Ransom Davis and his family traveled with his father-in-law and other Cane Creek members to Orange County, Indiana around 1814.
Mr. Davis brought his family to the new county of Bartholomew in 1820, settling in present day Newbern. He ran a general store, a mill, and farmed. He encouraged his brother, John Davis, Sr. (1771-1855) and family to come to Bartholomew County. Aaron Davis (1805-1881), a well known minister of the United Brethren church, was one of the eleven children of John Davis, Sr. who came from North Carolina. Ransom gave his nephew some land, which Aaron laid out in lots, forming the town of Newbern.
Ransom Davis and his wife, Hannah, had the following children: Sarah married Thomas Hook; Ephraim married Nancy Edwards; John married first to Mary Vickery and second to Elizabeth Rhorer, widow of John Hauser; Shemoleth married Alfred Vickery; William W. married Elizabeth Vickery; Albon G. married Vassa Ann Anderson; Harmon married Elizabeth Southwick and Shebarith died young. Mrs. Davis died 18 September 1826 and was the first burial in the Newbern cemetery.
After the death of his first wife, Mr. Davis married Elizabeth (Stout) Moon (1798-1867), widow of Jesse Moon. She was the mother of Enos, Charity and Jesse Moon and, by Mr. Davis, the following children: Vashti married Bartholomew County's early historian, Dr. John Crafton Beck; Matilda married Allen W. Dillman; Leah married Joseph Shaw, and at his death, married Henry Robertson; Noble Banner Davis; and Sarepta, who married David Keller and died in childbirth in 1855.
Ransom Davis died 26 March 1854 and Elizabeth Stout Moon Davis died 2 July 1867. They are buried in the cemetery at Newbern, in Clifty township.
