Thomas Hook obituary, Columbus, Indiana, Friday October 18, 1878:

ANOTHER GONE Thomas Hook Newbern, Ind.
Again we are called upon to record the death of an old man of 83 year, who died in his home in Newburn last night, of old age and general debility. He has been a citizen of this county for a number of years, and by his straightforward life he has won the respect of all who knew him. He has been very feeble for some time, and his death, though not unexpected, casts a gloom over the community in which he lived, and his neighbors will not soon forget old Uncle Tommy.

McKinney Hook obituary, Hope Newspaper, June 30, 1911:

He had been a resident of Elwood for several years and was one of the most highly respected citizens. He was the last surviving of eight children born to Daniel and Rebecca Carter of near Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio. He was born November 17, 1842, and August, 1862 was married to Miss Hannah E. Hook, who died twenty-six years ago. He is survived by five of his six children. They are Elmer Carter, 850 North Fourteenth street; Mrs. D.F. Jones, 1102 South A street; Cassius Carter, 1311 South D street; Seldon W. Carter, 1323 South K street, and Mrs. Alice Yarlot. Mr. Carter was a member of Company H, 145th Indiana Regiment during the civil war. He has been a member of the Masonic lodge for the last forty-three years and was also a member of the G.A.R. Odell, Baptist pastor, followed by burial in charge of the Masonic lodge in the city cemetery beside his wife.

Ellen Jane Hook obituary, Elwood Call-Leader, Tuesday, June 3, 1919:

Mrs. Ellen Jane Walters, 68, died at her home at 209 North Eleventh street this morning at 7 o'clock, of a complication of diseases, after suffering for the past six years, during a part of which she was blind. She was one of the city's best loved mothers and had been a resident of this city since 1883, coming here from Bartholomew county. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hook and the last surviving daughter of their family of twelve children. She was married December 24, 1873 to William Walters and three sons survive, Perry S. Walters, of Logansport; George A. Walters of Kokomo; and Clifford D. Walters, of this city. From People's Guide for Bartholomew Co., Clifty Township, 1874:

CLIFTY TOWNSHIP is located on the east side of the county, and is bounded as follows: On the north by Haw Creek Township; on the east by Decatur County; on the south by Rock Creek, and on the west by Clay, and contains an area of (20) twenty square miles. The surface is generally level or rolling. Except the breaks along the creeks the soil is very rich and productive, and the farm improvements of this township are scarcely second to any other in the county. Its only village is Newbern, situated in the northwest part of the township. The church and school privileges of the township are good; the citizens enterprising and industrious. Some of the first settlers of the township were Wm. McClintic, Francis Miller and Thomas Hook .

From People's Guide for Bartholomew Co., Clifty Township, 1874, page 299:

Hook, Thomas ; retired farmer; 1 & 1/2 miles south east of Newbern. Born in Maryland 1799; settled in Bartholomew County, 1826, Democrate, Universalist.

From Bartholomew County History, 1888:

Clifty and Clay Townships, -- These two townships having been under one organization until 1842, we shall consider them as one in giving their school history. William Morris, a young teacher from Pennsylcania, taught the first school in this township in 1822-23, on the south bank of Clifty, about two miles west of Newbern, where General Charles Scott's Army crossed Clifty on their expedition against the Indians in May, 1791. George D. Roland, Mrs. Sally Hook , Mrs. Luke Covert, and perhaps others yet living, attended this school.
