John Presley Marshall obituary, Tipton Daily Tribune, 14 Mar 1934, Tipton, Tipton Co., Indiana

PIONEER OF THIS COUNTY, James Presley Marshall Died At Home Of His Son In Curtisville

One of the splendid pioneer residents of the Curtisville community was claimed by death Tuesday night when James Presley Marshall age 86 succumbed at the home of his son M.C. Marshall and family in Curtisville. About eight years ago Mr. Marshall lost the sight of both his eyes and it later became necessary for both eyeballs to be removed, as they were causing him such pain. Since the loss of his sight the aged man has sustained several falls and has been in failing health for some time, death overtaking him at 11:00 o'clock Tuesday night. James Presley Marshall was born December 14, 1847 in Rush County being one of six children of Benjamin F. and Jane Marshall. In 1851 the family removed to this county locating on the Dr. J.T. Jessup farm, three fourths mile northeast of Curtisville and the deceased spent the remainder of his life in that locality. Mr. Marshall was the last one of his immediate family, he being survived however by one half-brother Francis Marshall residing at Richmond. B.F. Marshall, father of James Presley Marshall was one of the pioneer timber men of this county. In 1868 he erected a steam saw mill at Curtisville and did an extensive business with the mill, shipping many thousands of feet of native lumber to the markets. The mill was later operated by the late Levi Colvin and Leander Goodwin. In 1868 James was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Jane Smith of the Curtisville community and they were the parents of seven children, only four of whom grew to adult age and one of these four Everet died in 1909 and another Mrs. John Stotler in 1927. The two surviving are M.C. Marshall at whose home the father died and Mrs. Rose Jones also a resident of that community. Mrs. Marshall died in 1885 and Mr. Marshall later married Anna Balser, this union being blessed by two daughters ,both of whom survive; Mrs.Goldie Lyst of Elwood and Mrs.Clyde Kinder of Curtisville. The second wife was a victim of the flu epidemic in 1917 and since that time Mr. Marshall has made his home with his son. The deceased was a member of the IOOF Lodge at Windfall and also of the Friends Church at Curtisville, he being a faithful worker in the activities of both his lodge and his church as long as his health would permit. During his long residence in this county he has made scores of friends whom he leaves to mourn his passing. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at the Friends Church in Curtisville with Rev Polly Couch Bowman in charge. Burial will be in the Curtisville Cemetery.
