Notes from Robert M. Sharp family data:

There is good evidence that Hugh H. Marshall is our Marshall ancestor. He is closely tied through land records to our Phillip Marshall. Our Marshall family line is proven back to Phillip through Bible records and other verifiable sources. The booklet "Recollections: Yesterday, Today for Tomorrow", published in 1969 by Bracken County Homemakers says that Hugh Marshall came to Bracken County with the Philip Buckner party in 1796. There were a total of 40 families, 70 people in all. Philip Buckner of Caroline Co, VA was a Captain in the Continental Army of Virginia. As a result of his service, he received several thousand acres of land, beginning in 1781, in Kentucky and Ohio. He made his first trip into the area in 1783, and later made several trips back and forth. In 1793 he took his family and friends and 40 Negroes to Bear Grass Station, a military post (present-day Louisville, KY.) He left them there and returned to VA "to induce other families" to relocate. Who would be more logical to encourage than his own brothers, nephews, and cousins. Apparently he had much land, much more than he could use, and he was offering it to those who would like to have it. Augusta, Kentucky, one of the earliest settlements on the Ohio River, was founded by Phillip Buckner in 1795. He received the land as a gift from the Commonwealth of Virginia for his gallant participation in the Revolutionary War. The 200 acres at the mouth of the Little Bracken Creek were first surveyed in 1780 by Buckner and several scouts. Pleased with the land development potential, Buckner later returned with his family, a small group of settlers, and 40 slaves. The settlement at that time was part of Mason County. In December 1796, Mason and Campbell Counties were divided to form Bracken County. Augusta was named the county seat. On October 2, 1797, Philip Buckner dedicated 600 acres to the town of Augusta. Hugh H. Marshall is an early resident of Bracken Co, KY. He is first found in Bracken County 1798 land records. He purchased 333 acres from Edwards Salts on 03 Mar 2798. Edward Salts purchased this land in 1795 as part of a 1000 acre purchase, while a citizen of Bourbon County, KY. Edward was licensed to keep an ordinary (general store) in Bracken County, and ran a ferry between there and Bullskin Creek in what is now Franklin Township in Clermont County, OH. When he sold some of his Kentucky property to Hugh Marshall, he kept "one half right of running a ferry to and from the premises." (Louis Evarts. HISTORY OF CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO. (Philadelphia, 1880) There is a Hugh Marshall listed in Bracken County Tax Records 11/22/1799. Kentucky itself had been admitted to the Union on June 1, 1792. This was only 17 years since Daniel Boone had established one of the first permanent white settlements at Boonesboro. Hugh's last land transaction in Bracken Co, KY lists him as a Preble Co, OH resident on 24 May 1818. He is probably also the Hugh Sr listed in the 1820 Preble Co, OH census and the 1827 personal tax list for Jefferson Township in Preble county. This is the last record of him that has been found.

Kesiah probably died sometime between 1806 and 1814. She signed a land record 26 Mar 1806 and was not present when her husband Hugh signed another land record 14 Feb 1814.

Philip (pg 73) matches my Philip based on known children. I believe my Hugh M. Marshall is listed as one of his children in 1820 (age19). My Hugh M. also did not marry until 1829. As for the Hugh and Hugh Jr.; Hugh, listed in the 1881 History, would have young female children in 1820. Hugh Jr. as listed has three small female children. This Hugh would have been 31 in 1820 which matches the census 26-45 Male. Thiscould mean that this Hugh Jr. is the Hugh listed in the 1881 History. The other Hugh might be the father of Hugh Jr, and possibly the brother of my Philip?? The elder Hugh would have a son living at home and possibly a new wife. )
