Biography and Timeline
From Huntington County, Indiana History & Families 1834 - 1993 :
WEBSTER JOHN THOMPSON - was the son of Elijah Prible Thompson and his wife Lucy Chopson Thompson and was born in Section 14, Salamonie Twp., Huntington County on Nov. 15, 1881. He spent his youth on his father's farm and continued to till the soil throughout his life. He attended grade school at the Hamilton School near his home and later spent two years at Valparaiso College, Valparaiso, IN.
On Oct. 17, 1905 he married Mildred Landonna Shafer, daughter of Philip Henry and Sarah Elizabeth Landonna Ruble. They went to housekeeping on one of his father's farms just east of the Woodlawn Cemetery, Warren, IN. In September 1915, they moved to the Thompson home farm in Section 13. He lived there until his death on July 2, 1966. His wife Mildred died Feb. 8, 1962.
To this union was born nine children: Ruby Jane, born Oct. 9, 1907, married Ward Irick on May 21, 1927; Elizabeth, born Oct. 21, 1909, married Herbert Bolinger on June 1, 1929; Elijah Philip, born Dec. 15, 1911, married Dorotha Jones on Dec. 14, 1935; John Webster, born Dec. 28, 1913, married Grace Schemerhorn on Feb. 25, 1939; Wendell Shafer, born April 1, 1916, married Madaline Druckemiller on Nov. 28, 1959; Lois Lucretia, born Aug. 27, 1919, married Laurence Booher on Oct. 5, 1973; Ned Howard, born March 2, 1922, died Aug. 23, 1942;Sybil Jean, born Oct. 28, 1924, married John Lashley on Aug. 14, 1949; and Wayne Dickson, born June 28, 1927, married Betty Jones on March 24, 1948. All of these children, with the exception of Ned, are still living.
The sheepskin for the farm was issued April 24, 1837 to William Thompson signee for John Howard Thompson, and is signed by Pres. Martin Van Buren for a cost of 50 cents per acre.
In 1840, he and his father and two brothers sold their shares in Bracken County, KY and came to Indiana in wagons. John settled on this wilderness farm and cleared the land, tore down an Indian lodge and built a two-room clapboard house. In 1885 the present house was built, then remodeled in 1972 after a fire which nearly destroyed the house.
At present the house is owned by Elijah Philip Thompson, great-great-grandson of John Howard Thompson and his three sons: George Howard, Lynn Reid and Philip Thompson.
Thus this farm has been home for 95 years to the Thompson family, covering the depression years when one or more families made it their home. Several young boys spent long hot summers helping work the farm for their room and board. Webster and his wife Mildred cared for a great number of friends and family. It seemed there was always another place at the table, set for anyone in need.
The Thompson Home Cemetery was established in 1847. It was incorporated in 1919. This cemetery is located at the end of the farm lane on land given by John Howard and his son Elijah Prible Thompson. Much love and care has been spent on this cemetery.
The whole family have been devout members of the Boehmer Methodist Church.
