Biography and Timeline

From the Shafer Family history:

In the beginning of the eighteenth century in Rockingham County, Virginia, lived Philip Shafer. He was a Revolutionary soldier and, after the war, he had married and became a slave holder and owner of large tracts of land. Two sons were born to him. The oldest, Philip, married Elizabeth Stonebraker. According to custom, Philip Shafer, Jr., inherited the large estate of his father, including the slaves. The second son was left to make his own way while the father lived with the elder son, Philip. Two children were born to Philip and Elizabeth Shafer, John and Sarah. The slaves were treated with so much kindness by their young master, Philip, that they became very much attached to him. When the grandfather died, Philip gave part of the estate to his younger brother, freed the slaves, sold the remainder of the land, and moved to Butler County, Ohio, leaving the slaves in tears over the loss of such a kind master.
