Biography and Timeline

From Huntington County, Indiana History & Families 1834-1993:

JONATHON RUBLE & RUTH (RUSE) - Jonathon Ruble was born Nov. 9, 1816 in Clinton County, OH near Wilmington. He moved with his parents, Walter and Sara (Wright) Ruble, to Randolph County, IN in 1824. He returned to Clinton County, OH to marry Ruth Ruse on April 28, 1842. Ruth was born Feb. 13, 1823 to Thomas and Margaret Ruse.

In 1848 Jonathon and Ruth moved to Salamonie Twp., Huntington County, IN. They settled on a 100 acre farm one mile south of Plum Tree that they purchased from Hiriam Phillips for $220. It was a wilderness. One day when Jonathon went on an overnight trip to town for supplies, Ruth heard a terrible commotion outside. When she went to investigate, she found a big black bear trying to get into the rail pen to get their young calves. Jonathon's useful labors helped to broaden the scope of cultivated land in Section Nine and he developed it into the Glen Locust Farm.

He was a man of influence and fine character. Ruth united early in life with the Friends Church. When they moved to Indiana, they became active in the Methodist Church at Plum Tree. The faith which they possessed, they carried into their daily activities and their home was not only noted for its hospitality to friends, but also for its kindnesses.

They had 10 children and when Jonathon died on Jan. 20, 1872 at the age of 55, he still had three boys and three girls in the Foreman Grade School. It was just across the corner from his house.

Their children were: Mary J. (married Levi Williamson), Aaron (married and moved to Jefferson Twp.), Sarah, Ladonna (Doni) (married Phillip Shafer), James W. (married Berthena Tharp and moved to 3364E Shafer Road), and Thomas Allen (married and moved to the old Beard farm one-half mile east of Warren; later it was part of the Jones farm), Emma moved to Indianapolis.

The last few years of Ruth's life she spent in Aaron's home, where she died April 21, 1907 at the age of 84 years, two months and eight days. Funeral services were held at Plum Tree Methodist Church. Both Jonathon and Ruth are buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Warren.

John Beard obituary, The Warren Tribune, Friday, August 26, 1904:

John Beard, son of George M. and Rhodana Beard was born in Gettysburg, Ohio, January 30, 1827, died August 16, 1904, aged 77 years, 6 months and 16 days. He came with his parents to Huntington county when he was eleven years old. They were guided to their destination by Fleming Mitchell and many were the hardships they endured in coming to their new home. In this section Mr. Beard grew to manhood. He was married to Rebecca Ruble November 13, 1861. To this union were born ten children of whom two have gone to the better land. There are twenty-seven grand-children and three great-grand children. By the death of his wife six years ago his home was broken up and he has since made his home with his children. His death occurred at the home of his son, Thomas, at Dillman where he had gone previous to his last illness which was of two years' duration. Mr. Beard's life was one that was upright and commendable. Many years ago he united with a Disciples' church but the class was afterwards disbanded and he never united with any other. Five sons and three daughters survive him. They are Mrs. Sarah Williams, living south east of this city, Thomas A., of Dillman, George j., of this city, Joseph A., of Landesville, Mrs. Ruth Boxell, of Hartford City, Charles of Landessville, Franklin, of this city and Mrs. Minnie Schoonover, of Lima, Ohio. He has one brother, Samuel Beard, living in Kansas The funeral services were conducted at Dillman Thursday forenoon by Rev. J.E. Etter. The burial was at Woodlawn cemetery.

Thomas Allen Ruble obituary, The Warren News, Friday, February 21, 1890:

Thomas Allen Ruble, son of Jonathan and Ruth Ruble, was born June 10, 1847, and departed this life Feb. 13, 1890, aged 42 years, 8 months and 3 days. He was married to Sarah E. Eubank, October 17, 1869, and to this union were born eleven children, two of whom are dead. He became a member of the United Brethren in Christ at the age of about twenty years, and from that time he is credited with living a christian life. My own observation of him was that he was a very careful man in the use of words and in his conversation about others he manifested great charity. He was a devoted companion and an affectionate father. He gave positive testimony of his preparation for death. Funeral services were held in the M.E. church at Warren, conducted by the writer, and interment took place in the Batson cemetery. C.B. Small

From History of Huntington County, 1914:

JAMES W. RUBLE

In the annals of early settlement of Huntington county, one of the names which is first to be mentioned is that of the Ruble family, and it is of this family that James W. Ruble of Salamonie township is a prominent representative. For more than sixty-five years the name has had its place in the history of Huntington county, and James W. Ruble is one of the older native sons of the county, and has been long identified with the industry of agriculture, a vocation which brings credit to its follower and helps to create the resources and wealth of the community. James W. Ruble is known far and wide as the proprietor of the Merry Hill Farm, a highly developed country estate of eighty acres, situated two and a quarter miles northeast of Warren.

James W. Ruble was born in Salamonie township at what is known as the Locust Glen farm, March 4, 1852, a son of Jonathan and Ruth (Ruse) Ruble . His father was a son of Walter and Sarah Ruble, and was born November 9, 1816, in Clinton county, Ohio. It was during his childhood that his parents left Ohio and settled in Randolph county, Indiana, where he grew to manhood, but subsequently returned to his native county, where on April 28, 1842, he married Ruth Ruse, She was a daughter of Thomas and Margaret Ruse, and was born February 13,1823. A few years after his marriage Jonathan Ruble made a change of residence and established his home in 1848 in what was still the wilderness of Salamonie township of Huntington county. His useful labors helped to broaden the scope of cultivated land in that section, and he was a man of influence and fine character. His death occurred January 20, 1872. He and his wife were very active as Methodists in their community, and took a regular part in the activities of their home church. The faith which they possessed they carried into all their daily activities, and their home was noted not only for its hospitality to friends but for the kindness which emanated from its doors and which made it a source of help and comfort to many who needed assistance in distress. There were ten children in the family, and four are yet living: Mary J. is the wife of Levi Williamson; Sarah L. E. is the wife of Philip Shafer of Salamonie township; Aaron Ruble lives in Jefferson township; and James W. is the youngest of the four still living.

His boyhood was spent in the wholesome environment of the country, and his education was acquired by attendance at the old fashioned district schools, a type of educational institutions which have long since gone out of vogue, and there are perhaps only one or two schoolhouses in the entire county which would bear any resemblance to the temple of learning which Mr. Ruble attended as a boy. After his education was finished and he had made a practical beginning of his career as a farmer, he married Berthena Tharp, a sister of Isaac M. Tharp. She was born in Wells county, Indiana. Of the six children of that marriage, four are still living, and their mother passed away July 25, 1888. The living children are: Alva D., a florist in Indianapolis; Charles, who is married and a farmer in Salamonie township; Mamie, wife of George Brown of Liberty Center, Indiana; Lucy, wife of Leonard Break of Adams county, Indiana. For his second marriage Mr. Ruble married Alice (Thrailkill) Day, widow of Richard Day. Mrs. Ruble was born in Liberty township of Wells county, August 23, 1862, grew up there, received her education in the common schools of her native township, and was a daughter of Silas Thrailkill, who was born in Clinton county, Ohio, August 5, 1834, and died July 15, 1901.

Mr. and Mrs. Ruble are active members of the Methodist Protestant church, of which he is one of the trustees and has long been one of its most liberal supporters. In politics a Republican, he has often used his influence in the party for the benefit of good government in the locality, and is a man whose opinion and advice are much courted in this part of Huntington county.
