Biography and Timeline
Orval Jones was born in 1901, the fourth child of Andrew and Rosetta Jones. As a child, he lived in Tipton County, Indiana, on a farm outside of Elwood. There, he helped out on the farm and attended school. Prior to getting married at age 19, he worked hard in the wheat and corn fields to save money. He also got a job as a forge worker, making automobile parts.
Lola Hook was the daughter of Clarence and Faye Hook. She was born in 1904 in Madison County, Indiana. For most of her childhood, she lived in the Elwood area, but did live with her parents in Shelby County for a short time around 1910. Prior to getting married at the young age of 16, she attended school and got a job processing laundry.
Orval and Lola were married on October 2, 1920 in Anderson, Indiana. They continued living in the Elwood area and started a family a few years later. There was a little excitement during one of Lola's pregnancies when the doctor attempted to make a house call one day. Orval was working at the steel mill while Lola was home on the farm where they lived. When the doctor arrived, the family dog wouldn't let the doctor in the house.
Around 1930, they moved a short distance up to Fairmount, which is in Grant County, Indiana. Here, they started a business called "Jonsie's Hatchery". They bought and sold cream, poultry, and eggs. Orval would deliver poultry to Detroit and other cities on the east coast. On one trip to New York during one of the bank panics of the Great Depression, Orval's timing was perfect. He was able to sell all the chickens for cash just before the banks shut their doors. With the cash, they were able to continue the business and save money for buying farm land. Orval was a very successful business man, also owning a pool hall in Fairmount, a farm implement business in Swayzee, and a coal yard in Summitville.
Around 1943, the Jones family moved to Montpelier, in Blackford County, Indiana, where Orval purchased farm land. The family lived in town for a short time before moving to a farm about half a mile outside of town. After living on the farm for a number of years, they eventually moved back into town. Orval enjoyed fishing up at Coldwater Lake in Michigan, and even lived up there for a short time. On Sundays, Orval was a frequent spectator at the local auto races. He also liked to hang out at the local pool hall, playing cards with friends, and enjoyed smoking a good cigar. Lola loved watching wrestling on TV every Saturday afternoon. She would sit on the edge of the couch and yell "you dirty skunks" at the wrestlers. She also enjoyed playing cards with her friends.
Lola was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and sewing. She made doll clothes for the grandkids. The grandkids also reaped the benefits of a very generous tooth fairy at grandma and grandpa's house. Orval and Lola would normally eat a late breakfast around 9:00 am, skip lunch, and have an early supper at 4:00 pm. Lola always had 1/2 & 1/2 for her cereal and real butter for bread instead of margarine. Orval liked his water really cold, he kept a tall colored tin glass in the refrigerator filled with water. Orval was usually more reserved and serious, while Lola was more happy-go-lucky.
Everyone had a good time at family gatherings at their home in Montpelier. Memories include making home-made ice cream and eating Lola's deliciuos home-made deserts: cinnamon sticky buns, black raspberry pie and black raspberry dumplings. For some birthday parties, she would bake a double layer cake with sliced bananas in the center and white fluffy frosting. Playing Shanghi Rummy was always a big hit. Orval would always keep his cards to himself, in hopes of catching you with a handful of cards to count. In October of 1970, family and friends joined them to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Twenty years later in 1990, family and friends traveled from as far as California and Florida to be with Orval and Lola on their 70th wedding anniversary. They lived in Montpelier for over 50 years until they died. Lola died in 1992 at the age of 88 and Orval died 8 years later in 2000 at the age of 99.
